The RCA Unidirectional Model MI-3025, Type 77A (left), circa 1936, was the first unidirectional microphone noted for its high-quality sound. It utilized double ribbons, combining a pressure unit with a velocity unit to achieve the unidirectional pattern. The Shure Cardioid Model 555-556 (right), circa 1940, functioned by using time delay networks on sounds arriving at openings at the back of the mic, allowing controlled cancellation, and producing a cardioids pattern.
